The Virgin Suicides was Sofia Coppola’s debut feature film. And goodness what a debut it was! It’s odd how you can fall so in love with a movie about five miserable teenagers who kill themselves, but there’s this certain magic to the mystery of the whole story that is undeniably addicting. One of my very favorite things about the way this movie was made, is that it’s told very closely from the point of view of the boys across the street, and you don’t realize it until the very end. Throughout the movie there are all these moments where you realize you have hardly any idea what is truly going on. And that even though Lux is essentially the main character, you know hardly a thing about her. Then, you realize it’s because Coppola, in all her brilliance, is trying to make you, as a viewer, feel the same sense of mystery about the girls and the whole situation as those boys felt as they collected their remains and tried to put the pieces together. It’s enchanting, mysterious, fun, and just plain beautiful.
